The artworks of student artists are featured in the “Creature Feature” curated show.
Each quarter, students in the painting class choose a theme to work on. For the Halloween season, the theme was “Creature Feature.”
“This is what we do, we let the kids do what they want, we just give them a size of the canvas,” Art teacher Gabriel Bernal said.
This quarter, Bernal aimed to challenge his students to elevate their performance.
“I said okay I am gonna put an open call to everybody in the school and ya’ll are going to be competing for your shot,” Bernal said.
Students began working on their artwork on Sept. 16 and submitted their final pieces for judging on Oct. 3. After the deadline, seven art teachers were selected to review all the paintings and select the best ones.
“It [was] all laid out, with nothing but the title and the artwork, ” he said.
As judges, the art teachers checked for the three criteria: “Did it hit the theme? Is it ready to hang? Is it finished?”
Out of the seven teachers, only three needed to approve the artwork for submission.
“The ones who didn’t [make it] we try to get them to understand why [they] didn’t get selected,” Bernal said.
This quarter’s theme will focus on a retro vibe, featuring arcade games or game characters.
